Why Your Clock-Checks Never Speed Up Before a Deadline

3:00 is when you need to leave. At 1:45 you check the clock β€” plenty of time β€” and go back to what you're doing. At 2:10 you check again. Still fine. The next check should land around 2:35. Instead it's 2:58, and you're suddenly moving fast for reasons you can't quite name.

People usually chalk that up to not paying attention. A 2025 VR study says something more specific: you were probably checking the clock the whole time. You just never sped up as the deadline closed in, and speeding up turns out to be the part that matters.

What the clock-checking count showed

A 2025 study in Scientific Reports put 71 kids with ADHD and 71 without into a virtual reality world built to feel like ordinary life, complete with cooking, packing a bag, getting ready to leave. Each kid got a task to complete at a specific time, a clock visible on the wall the whole time, and researchers tracked exactly when they looked at it.

First surprise: kids with ADHD checked the clock about as often as everyone else, 23.6 times on average versus 21.2 for the comparison group. Not a meaningful difference. If "time blindness" meant simply not looking, that gap should've shown up right here. It didn't.

The real gap showed up in when those checks happened. Researchers measured what they called relative clock-checking: how many of a kid's total checks clustered in the final stretch before the deadline, versus spread out earlier when there was nothing useful to learn yet. Kids without ADHD concentrated 26.7% of their checks into that home stretch, naturally checking more often as the moment got closer. Kids with ADHD only managed 17.6%. They kept checking. It just stayed on roughly the same loose schedule the whole time, instead of tightening up as it mattered more.

That timing gap accounted for almost the entire performance difference. Kids with ADHD completed the timed task successfully 32.7% of the time, versus 39.3% for the comparison group β€” and when researchers ran the numbers, the strategic-monitoring gap alone explained that difference. Attention span and memory for the task barely factored in.

Why the pattern breaks down

The researchers' explanation is worth sitting with, because it reframes what's actually failing. Reading a clock is easy. Caring about the deadline is easy too, most of the time. The hard part is using information from your last check to decide when the next one should happen β€” a specific kind of proactive planning, and exactly the executive function ADHD tends to hit hardest. Add in a faster-running internal clock, likely tied to dopamine signaling, and you get a system nudging you to check early and often instead of holding off and ramping up right when it counts.

That study was done in kids, and it's fair to flag that plainly. The researchers themselves note this is a first look at the mechanism, not a settled fact about every age. But the pattern lines up with what shows up independently in the adult research. A 2023 review of time perception in adult ADHD found the science on internal timing is still thin (only a handful of studies exist), but the real-world fallout clinicians report is consistent: adults with ADHD chronically struggle to keep appointments and honor time-based agreements, and it costs them real stress and strained relationships. Nobody's run the adult version of the VR clock study yet. But "I glance at my phone plenty, I just never seem to glance at the right moment" will probably sound familiar regardless of your age.

What to actually do with this

Here's what actually works: stop asking your own judgment to decide when to check next β€” that's precisely the call ADHD makes unreliably β€” and build the escalation into the tool instead. Set staged alerts that get more frequent as you close in on a deadline: a check-in at sixty minutes out, then thirty, then ten, then five, so the ramping-up happens automatically instead of depending on you sensing that "now" is more urgent than "twenty minutes ago" was. A visible countdown timer does the same job passively; instead of you deciding when a glance is warranted, the shrinking number does the deciding for you.

(A single loud alarm won't do this, and you've probably already tried one. It goes off, you silence it, and you slide right back into whatever you were doing β€” one ping doesn't carry the escalating urgency a deadline is supposed to create.)
