Body Doubling Just Got Its First Real Data — Here's What It Shows
You've probably heard of body doubling by now — the trick where you get unstuck simply by having another person nearby while you work, even if they're folding laundry and you're doing your taxes. It's one of the most-repeated pieces of ADHD advice on the internet. Coaches swear by it. Focusmate built a whole company on it. And until the last year or so, basically nobody had tested whether it actually does anything.
That's not a knock on the people it's helped — including, probably, you. It's just that "everyone says it works" and "it works" are different claims, and for once we have a little real data to close the gap.
Where the idea even came from
The term itself is younger than you'd think. An ADHD coach noticed a client kept getting more done on days his wife happened to be sitting nearby, doing her own thing. She started recommending it to other clients, gave it a name, and it spread through the ADHD community the way good tricks do — word of mouth, no lab required. That's worth sitting with for a second: this is folk wisdom that outran the science by decades. Not wrong, just untested.
The two studies that finally showed up
The first is small and comes out of accessibility research: 26 people — some with ADHD (on and off medication) and some without — did reading comprehension tasks alone and then with a body double, while wearing EEG caps that tracked focus and calm. The topline result: no statistically significant difference across the whole group. But the unmedicated ADHD participants showed a trend toward benefit, and nobody in any group did worse with a double present. Not a win, but not nothing — "safe and maybe helpful for the group who needs it most" is a reasonable way to read it.
The second study is where it gets interesting. Twelve ADHD adults did a repetitive VR task — stacking virtual bricks — for 20 minutes at a stretch, under three conditions: alone, with a real person alongside them, and with an AI-controlled avatar standing in as the "double." Working alone, they placed about 8.5 bricks a minute. With a human double, that jumped to roughly 10.8 — about 27% faster, and statistically real (p = .04). With the AI double: 11.06 a minute, an even slightly bigger bump, also statistically real (p = .03).
Here's the twist worth noticing: the AI performed just as well as the human. Whatever body doubling is doing, it doesn't obviously require a person who's paying attention to you, judging you, or even being conscious. A silent avatar got the same lift.
Accuracy told a quieter story — 86.6% correct alone, 90.8% with a human, 88.5% with AI, and none of those differences hit statistical significance. So the effect looks like it's mostly about speed and sustained attention, not carefulness. Participants also rated their own focus and their sense of "staying with the task" significantly higher in both double conditions compared to working solo — that part was one of the clearest results in the whole study.
What that actually tells you
Two studies, 38 people combined, is not a verdict — it's a start. Treat it that way. But it's a genuinely useful start, because it points at something specific: the mechanism might not be "another human is watching me," so much as "something else is sharing this space and this moment with me." That reframes what counts as a body double. A co-working video call where nobody talks. A livestreamed study session with a stranger on the other side of the world. Possibly, per this early data, even a screen.
It also gives you permission to stop overthinking the setup. You don't need someone doing the same task. You don't need them to be encouraging or checking in — the ADHD coach who coined the term was explicit that the double should stay quiet and independent, not supervise. You just need presence, in whatever form is available to you at 9pm on a Tuesday when the only body double option is an app.

If you've never tried it, or tried it once and shrugged, the data suggests it's worth a real test rather than a single half-hearted attempt, since the effect showed up specifically in a sustained 20-minute block, not an instant.
One thing to actually try today: pick the task you've been circling all week, set a 20-minute timer, and do it in the presence of something else working — a co-working call, a friend on their own laptop, even a "study with me" video running in the background. Notice whether it's speed that changes, focus that changes, or neither. That's more data than most of us had a year ago.
